When you leave Rancho Casitas, continue on the dirt road until you hit the paved road which is Highway 1. Turn right towards Ensenada. Go about 12 miles watching for the big Soriana/Office Depot sign on your left. (See picture)
Turn left at this signal. Go for about ½ miles to where it dead-ends into the busy “main” highway (PEMEX gas station is on your right). Turn right at the signal. Go for about one mile following the signs to Tijuana/Toll Road 1. Proceed for about 7 miles to the first tollbooth.
Continue on the toll road through the 3rd (and last) tollbooth. You are now in Tijuana. Continue in the right lane for bout 1.7 miles looking carefully for an exit to I-5/San Diego on your right. Watch for this exit- it comes up rather suddenly. Exit right and follow the signs up a steep hill then down a long hill. You are now on the road that parallels the US/Mexico border fence.
After a few miles you will see an orange building “Capello de Calvario” – (Calvary Chapel) on your right. Go beyond this building and take the
y-intersection going off to your right. Be careful here as this lane will cross over traffic and is NOT a one way street. After less than a half mile look for the signs to I-5 San Diego and turn left. Stay in the #2 lane as long as you can and don’t go to the far right or you will miss the border. Within a few hundred yards you will go under a bridge and veer off to the right and get in line for the US
Important
However… sometimes (when it’s real busy) the Mexican police have blocked the on-ramp and will motion you to stay to the left. The sign says “Otay Mesa.” You can go to Otay Mesa which is another border crossing 40 minutes away but it could take longer.
Instead just remain on the road and make the first right turn possible. Continue a few blocks to a T intersection and make another right turn onto another entrance to the US.
